Homemade Onion Soup and Dip Mix

Growing up, my mom always had a box or two of Lipton’s onion soup in the kitchen cabinet. I actually don’t remember her ever using it to make soup – but I do remember her mixing half a package or so in a container of sour cream to make onion dip.

Fast forward to today – and we decided to try our hand at creating our own Homemade Onion Soup and Dip Mix! And it tastes just like the packaged mixes – at a fraction of the cost.

What goes into Homemade Onion Soup and Dip Mix?

I think you’ll be happy to learn that this soup and dip mix can be made with ingredients you probably have on hand in your kitchen cabinet and spice drawer.

It’s a mix of beef bouillon (ideally find the low-sodium variety) combined with dried minced onion and onion powder, granulated garlic, parsley flakes, salt and pepper, a little sugar, celery seed and paprika. We also added corn starch which acts as a thickener in recipes, and it also helps prevent the mix from clumping together.

How do you cook with Homemade Onion Soup and Dip Mix?

To make soup – the general proportion is one cup of hot water to 1 ½ teaspoons of this Onion Soup and Dip Mix. Mix and allow to sit so that the ingredients dissolve and rehydrate.  You can, of course, add more or less to suit your tastes.

To make onion dip – combine about half of this recipe in a pint of sour cream and stir to combine. Again – add more or less to suit you tastes.  Allow the dip to chill for several hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the dried onions, garlic and parsley to rehydrate. Then grab the chips – and dig in!

My mom also used onion soup mix as a seasoning in lots of different recipes – including this delicious meatloaf recipe.

    1. Hi Joanne – Assuming you are using dried spices that are fresh, up to a year. (If your spice have been open for a while, less.)
