I still remember the first time I had a chai tea many years ago. My friend Lisa and I were at Starbucks – and chai tea lattes were the ‘new thing’ to order (way) back then! I was instantly hooked on the warm spicy flavors, and to this day the taste of chai reminds me of my long-ago friend!
Fast forward to now, and our Chai Tea Smoothie is a delicious way to enjoy all of the same delicious flavors – but in smoothie form!
We made our own chai tea concentrate using an easy chai spice mix recipe that we will share with you here tomorrow – but if you already have some store-bought chai tea bags or chai tea concentrate at home, that will work just as well.
We mixed our homemade chai tea concentrate with ice, milk, agave nectar, plain Greek yogurt and some vanilla extract in a blender until smooth and frothy.

Chai Tea Smoothie
Ingredients
Chai Tea Concentrate
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon Chai Spice Mix (store bought or click here tomorrow for our homemade recipe)
- 7 black tea bags
Additional Smoothie Ingredients
- 3 cups ice cubes
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup agave nectar
- 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Start by preparing the chai tea concentrate: In a small saucepan, heat honey and water until just boiling. Stir to dissolve honey.
- Remove from heat and add Chai Spice Mix and teabags. Cover and allow to steep for 7 minutes. Remove teabags and pour mixture into a container and chill completely (about 1 hour). (This makes about 2/3 cup of concentrate.)
- To make the smoothie, in a blender add prepared chai tea concentrate, ice cubes, milk, agave nectar, Greek yogurt and vanilla extract.
- Blend on Smoothie setting (if your blender has one) for one cycle or until light and frothy and all ice has been incorporated (approximately 1 minute on high if using a manual setting).
- Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

Notes
Note: The majority of the prep time listed is to allow the Chai Tea Concentrate to cool. This step can be done in advance.

Are there any other recipes I can make with the chai mix? Can I just add it to non-dairy milk?
Martha says
Hi Susan – Yes, you can add this to non-dairy milk. Just a reminder that this is just the spice mix, and doesn’t include tea, so if you were hoping for a chai tea drink made with that milk, you would also need to steep some tea bags.
We have Chai Sugar Cookie Squares recipe: https://www.afamilyfeast.com/chai-sugar-cookie-squares/ as well as a Chai Coconut Chicken Strips recipe: https://www.afamilyfeast.com/chai-coconut-chicken-strips/
You can also use this spice mix in any recipes that call for cinnamon – swapping this in would give the recipe a different flavor.

I have black chai tea bags. Could this be used as a substitution for the chai spice and black tea?
Martha says
Sure Jennifer!
Tanya says
Is the greek yogurt just used to make it thicker? I’m lactose intolerant and am wondering what a good substitute would be for the yogurt. I can sub almond milk for the actual milk. Thanks!
Martha says
Hi Tanya – The yogurt does make the smoothie thicker as well as provide protein and other nutrition. I suppose you could try swapping in silken tofu instead?
Adeline says
Sounds so good! I was thinking of prepping the concentrate beforehand and using it to make chai latte. How long can the concentrate last in the fridge?
Martha says
Hi Adeline – There really isn’t anything perishable in the concentrate so I’d say you can safely keep it in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Linda says
How many cups will this make? I have the concentrate made, but it is just me. I’d rather use a portion of the concentrate and ingredients….if that’s possible….and make a single serving.
Thanks
Linda
Martha says
Hi Linda – My apologies for the delay in responding. The recipe makes 3-4 cups of smoothie as written.
Linda says
Thanks. I must have missed that.
