Comeback Sauce

Comeback Sauce is a Southern-style zesty sweet sauce that tastes great on everything! Serve it as a sauce, condiment, or salad dressing.

What is Comeback Sauce?

It’s a creamy and zesty condiment or dip that is believed to have been created in the 1920’s in Jackson, Mississippi, at a restaurant called, The Rotisserie.

Today, there are many variations of Comeback Sauce – some thicker than others, some spicier, and some sweeter. But the most common ingredients are mayonnaise and chili sauce or ketchup, plus other ingredients such as Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot sauce, and seasonings.

Comeback Sauce is often served with Hush Puppies – crispy fried balls of seasoned cornbread. It’s also a delicious spread on sandwiches, or as a condiment with grilled meats. Some variations of this recipe serve it as a salad dressing over iceberg lettuce; it’s a spicier option to Ranch or Thousand Island dressings.

• It’s a versatile sauce. Serve it as a dip with our crispy Hush Puppies, spread it on a sandwich, or use it as a salad dressing.
• As written, our Comeback Sauce leans less spicy and a touch on the sweeter side. But feel free to make it spicier and less sweet to suit your tastes and how you plan to serve it.

• Mayonnaise – Mayonnaise is the primary ingredient, so choose your favorite brand (we used Hellman’s) or make mayonnaise from scratch.  
• Hot Sauce – We used Cholula but feel free to use your favorite hot sauce.
• Yellow Onion – Yellow onions have a mild flavor and you could also use a sweet onion or scallions as well. Avoid red or white onions for this recipe – their taste will overpower the sauce.
• Chili Sauce – Regular ketchup can be substituted for a less spicy version.
• Worcestershire Sauce
• Honey  
• Spices and Seasonings – Garlic powder, smoked paprika, dry mustard powder, and ground black pepper.

1. Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.
2. Chill until ready to serve.
3. Serve with Hush Puppies, dip for vegetables or cooked shrimp, or as a salad dressing.

• Can I make Comeback Sauce ahead of time?  Yes, this sauce tastes better as it sits and the flavors have a chance to meld.
• How do I store leftovers?  Refrigerate in a covered container for up to a week.
• Can I freeze this sauce?  We’ve never tried freezing it. I’d be worried that the sauce will separate as it freezes and thaws.
