Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars have a delicious fudgy chocolate almond layer underneath a sweet butter-crumb topping.Craving something sweet and delicious these days? I sure am – and these Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars will fit the bill one hundred percent! With an almond-flavor shortbread bottom layer, a rich chocolate-almond fudge middle, and a crumb topping – these delicious crumb bars come together in just minutes and bake up quickly.
How do you make Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars? You’ll start by combining flour, sugar, and baking powder – then add slightly softened butter that has been cut into small pieces, as well as eggs and almond extract. Mix together just enough that a crumb mixture forms. This crumb mixture is used for both the bottom layer as well as the crumb topping. Lightly press two thirds of the mixture into the bottom of a greased baking pan. Then spread a chocolate-almond layer over the top – this chocolate-almond mixture is a blend of chocolate chips, cream cheese and milk that are heated and melted together, then slivered almonds are stirred into the mix. Finally, the remainder of the crumb mixture is sprinkled on top – then bake the Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars just until lightly golden on top and around the edges.
What kind of chocolate should I use?We used dark chocolate chips (because it’s what we had on hand) but semi-sweet chocolate chips would also work well.
Can I use other kinds of nuts?Definitely – we used slivered almonds in these Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars, but I think chopped walnuts or pecans would also be delicious.
What if I don’t have almond extract? While we think the almond extract adds a distinctively delicious flavor to these crumb bars, if you prefer, you can swap in vanilla extract instead. Either way – they will be delicious! Enjoy! You may enjoy these other desserts:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, slightly softened
1 teaspoon almond extract
12 ounces (2 cups) chocolate chips (we used dark chocolate, semi-sweet is another good option)
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2/3 cup milk
1 cup slivered almonds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease the bottom of a 9×13” in baking pan or dish. Set aside.
In the bowl of a mixer, combine flour, sugar and baking powder. Cut butter into small pieces and scatter into the bowl, along with eggs and almond extract. On low speed, combine together until a very crumbly mixture forms. Do not over mix.
Pour 2/3rds of the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan and spread evenly. Very lightly press down with your fingers, but don’t pack the mixture down. Set aside.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, add chocolate chips, softened cream cheese, and milk. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, stir, then microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Stir to combine into a smooth chocolate mixture. If the chocolate isn’t fully melted, microwave again in 20-second intervals, stirring after each, until the mixture is smooth and fully mixed.
Once the chocolate and cream cheese mixture is melted, add almonds and stir to combine.
Pour chocolate almond mixture over bottom crust in the prepared pan. Use an offset spatula or spoon to spread to the edges.
Sprinkle remaining 1/3rd of the crumb mixture evenly on top of the chocolate filling.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the edges of the bars and top are lightly golden brown.
Remove from the oven and cool completely before cutting into squares. (We did 4 rows x 6 rows for 24 pieces, but since these Chocolate Almond Crumb Bars are very rich, smaller squares would also work.)
