Yield: 15 pieces
Prep: 15 minutesCook: 40 minutesTotal: 55 minutes

Ingredients

1 cup salted butter, softened (divided)

1 cup powdered sugar

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Non-stick cooking spray or shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch glass baking dish.
  3. Set aside 2 tablespoons of the softened butter to use later in the recipe.
  4. In large mixing bowl, beat remaining butter and sugar on high speed until fluffy.
  5. Add flour and cocoa powder, mix well.
  6. Press the cocoa mixture into the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  8. While the cocoa mixture bakes, place the reserved 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan along with the sweetened condensed milk.
  9. Cook on medium to low heat, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens slightly, about 15 minutes.
  10. Remove the condensed milk mixture from the heat and stir in vanilla.
  11. Pour over the baked chocolate crust.
  12. Bake 10 minutes longer, or until slightly golden brown.
  13. Remove the baking dish from the oven. Immediately and evenly top with the chocolate chips.
  14. Let the dish stand for about one minute, allowing the chocolate chips to soften and melt. With an offset spatula or the back of a large flat spoon, smooth out the melted chocolate in an even layer, all the way to the edges of the baking dish. It’s important to do this step while the chocolate chips are still warm, so it creates an even frosting on top.
  15. Immediately sprinkle the top of the chocolate with chopped nuts.
  16. Cool then cut into bars for serving.
  17. Store covered at room temperature.
